Adolescents who participated in activities had higher levels of conscientiousness than those who did not participate in activities; adolescents who participated in sports had a higher level of conscientiousness than those who did not participate in sports. Taken together, these results show that more conscientious adolescents were more likely to participate in activities and sports.

Participation in activities; Participation in sports; Conscientiousness (items derived from the NEO-PI-R, ten items were taken from the three different conscientiousness facets: self-discipline, achievement striving and dutifulness); Risky substance use (three items including measures of binge drinking, getting drunk and illegal drug use); Gender; Socioeconomic status; Pubertal timing as control variables.
(1) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you had more than 5 alcoholic drinks on one occasion?’’; (2) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you been drunk?’’; and (3) ‘‘About how often in the last 6 months have you used illegal drugs?’’
These items were measured on an eight-point scale from 1 ‘‘none’’ to 8 ‘‘31 or more times’’.
